I am computer and musically illiterate. (clueless) I am hoping to find a musician who can answer this.?

My kid has a keyboard and I want to know how she can connect to the computer to lay tracks or whatever they call it. What do I need, and is there a program that works with a mid range keyboard such as Yamaha YPG-225. I mean, its not the most expensive, but it is middle of the road for beginner type keyboards, I guess. She is doing really well with it, and would like to step further, but doesnt quite know what to do, and I am not sure what to get such as programs or whatever. Someone please help!
