Was Gibbon correct in attributing the fall of the western Roman empire to Christianity?

Constantine built his city Constantinople to be his capitol of his eastern empire. Byzantium was also Christian until the Arab invasion and occupation of the 7th and 8th centuries. Rome was old, decadent and effeminate. Her western empire fell because of emperor error, and societal failure. Christianity was still just barely legal when all this transpired.
