Who votes in the Brownlow count and why is it done in live time?

I've seen the news footage of the AFL brownlow medal count and it looks like they are just reading out names and people are sitting around waiting for the winner. Why do they do it in live time like that instead of just counting the votes beforehand - isn't it boring? Also who votes for the winner? And what do the rounds mean?
