If a person can simply start their own religion if they don't like the current one?

Christ didn't start a new religion. Salvation through Christ was taught in the Old Testament. It was the Jews who rejected Christ who started there own religion. Similarly Martin Luther didn't start a new religion. It was the popes who did that by introducing false teachings which were in opposition to genuine Christianity. All Luther wanted to do was to restore the Church to genuine Apostolic Christianity.
